Latest Update on 10/25/2019

Samsung has now released a patch for your Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, S10, S10+ and S10e to resolve the fingerprint issue we have reported on this post below. Your update will be sent to your device automatically  and will look like the screenshot below. The update is 7.1MB in size and fixes the fingerprint issue described below. Click “Update” once you get it and follow required instructions. Remember, this issue had only affected a few people who used cheap third-party screen protectors (original details are below the screenshot).

The ORIGINAL Problem:

(reported on October 20th)

If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note 10/10 Plus or Galaxy S10/S10 Plus/S10 5G, please be aware that there is a fingerprint recognition issue affecting those Samsung smartphones, which is a security concern and samsung has issued an official warning. This flaw is causing any fingerprint to unlock your samsung smartphone.

Samsung identified the problem as follows:

This issue involved ultrasonic fingerprint sensors unlocking devices after recognizing 3-dimensional patterns appearing on certain silicone screen protecting cases as users’ fingerprints.

In other words, some cheap third-party screen protectors are leaving a residue of your existing and valid fingerprint. And then when someone else tries their fingerprint on that same smartphone, it is unlocking the phone effortlessly creating a massive security flaw. This flaw only applies to SOME screen protectors, and is only affecting SOME people who have purchased cheap third party screen protectors.

If you still have Samsung’s own pre-installed screen protector, you shouldn’t be concerned.

What To Do Right Now:

Samsung recommend the following action for now until they release a software patch which will fix this issue:

To prevent any further issues, we advise that Galaxy Note10/10+ and S10/S10+/S10 5G users who use such covers to remove the cover, delete all previous fingerprints and newly register their fingerprints.

If you currently use front screen protective covers, to ensure optimum fingerprint scanning, please refrain from using this cover until your device has been updated with a new software patch.

So, if you have purchased any cheap third party screen protectors and are able to replicate this issue, stop using that screen protector now.

When Will It Get fixed?

Samsung has promised a software patch to be released as early as next week to resolve this issue. After you update your phone make sure to rescan your fingerprint in it’s entirety for maximum security.

That’s all we know so far.
